Now we move to the Grand Canyon West Ranch. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive east from Vegas through some of the most desolate country we've seen in a long time. Here, we were about 14 miles from the Grand Canyon. Originally, the land - all 1.5 MILLION acres - belonged to the Mormon church. Parts were sold off so that now the ranch is "only" 106,000 acres. They do in fact raise Corriente cattle on the ranch, in addition to hosting tourists. The cattle are not beef or dairy cattle. Rather, they are sold to Rodeo promoters for roping and other competitions. Oddly, the cattle must be trained to run out of the gate, because they have no idea what they're supposed to do! |
