IMG_6241.JPG - This is the Shibaozhai temple. Ninety nine steep steps go up to the top. Despite the broiling heat and humidity, we made it all the way to the very top. The structure is not free-standing. It leans against the rock behind it. Originally on a point of land in the Yangtze River, the rising water has now created an island, and the loosy-goosy suspension bridge now connects it with the mainland. The temple at the top was built during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1736--96) and access to it was by an iron chain attached to the cliff. The nine-story wooden pavilion was added in 1819 so that monks and visitors to the temple would not have to suffer the discomforts of the chain ascent.
